Is  jagermeister flammable? (A review)

This article will answer the following question: “Is  Jagermeister flammable?”. We will reveal what is Jägermeister made of, how much alcohol it has, how flammable it is, and other important questions.

Is  jagermeister flammable?

Jagermeister is not flammable, but if tossed into a bonfire the flames would grow bigger. Jägermeister doesn’t contain enough alcohol to burst in flames readily, it has 35% ABV (70 proof).

What is Jägermeister?

Jägermeister is a kind of digestif. It’s a beverage made with 56 herbs, fruits, and roots, served in a characteristic square green bottle.

The recipe remains the same since 1934, it was developed by Wilhelm and Curt Mast. The drink has 35% alcohol by volume (it’s 70 proof).

It is the flagship product of a German Company named Mast-Jägermeister SE.

Is Jägermeister whiskey or rum?

Neither. Whiskey and rum are fermented beverages, distilled liqueurs. Jägermeister is a kind of digestif, an extraction of herbs that are thought to aid digestion.

The product is mixed with alcohol, water, and sugars. The recipe remains the same since 1934.

What is Jägermeister made of?

According to the manufacturer, the Jägermeister’s master distillers prepare the drink every day according to the original recipe.

Herbs, blossoms, roots, and fruits are weighted to prepare the mixture. The alcohol content is set up right, and then the ingredients suffer maceration, which basically means being soaked in a liquid.

This process takes two or three days. The complete ingredients list is a trade secret, but we do know that every bottle contains at least the following: citrus peel, licorice, anise, ginger, juniper berries, and ginseng.

This mixture is then stored in oak barrels for a year for maturation. Later, the liquid is filtered and left to decant in the final green bottle, but not before setting the amount of alcohol and water right.

After the maturation, pure water, more alcohol, caramelized sugar, and liquid sugar are added to create the final liqueur. The company also states that a total of 383 quality checks are done along with all the processes.

Jägermeister is recommended to be stored on ice and served cold, especially after opening the bottle.

In the last few years, there had been a rumor that Jägermeister contains stag’s blood. This is not true. This fake news probably started because of the label, and because the word Jägermeister has is originated from the German word “hunting master”.

Is Jägermeister flammable or combustible?

Jägermeister is not very flammable. Its alcohol content is 70 proof, not enough to be considered flammable, but it can still catch fire if tossed into flames.

Also, if the liqueur is sprayed into flames, it would be considered flammable. But this is not common behavior.

Jägermeister’s flashpoint is around 27.5ºC (81.5ºF).

Flashpoint is the lower temperature at which a liquid starts evaporating spontaneously. It is different from the boiling point, which is the temperature something starts to evaporate greatly.

A low flashpoint means that Jägermeister would start to evaporate in mild conditions, close to room temperature.

Because the vapors contain alcohol, they become flammable, so attention is required if a good amount of it is exposed to the air in a confined room. This could lead to an explosion.

When a flammable substance reaches a vapor state, it also reaches the most flammable state. But don’t be afraid, it’s not something so hazardous. You can keep drinking Jägermeister normally.

Although, there’s a considerable fire risk in drinking a distilled beverage while smoking, or vice-versa. If this is something you do often, consider doing it outside or at least leave windows opened for better ventilation.

Jägermeister is not expected to burst in flames, but it’s not impossible for it to happen.

A combination of whiskey, naked flames, and clothes (or furniture) could be catastrophic if there’s a source of ignition close by.

In this video is possible to see a cup of Jägermeister being tossed into a bonfire, and making the flames grow even bigger.

What is ABV?

ABV is an abbreviation for alcohol by volume. It is a standard measure to write down how much ethanol (common alcohol) ratio is contained in a beverage.

It’s defined as the quantity (in ml) of pure ethanol in 100ml of the drink, at 20ºC (68ºF). The ABV number gives us information on how much alcohol a beverage has.

It’s important to note that ABV is not the same as volume fraction, a property commonly used in Chemistry.

A drink that has, let’s say, 50% ABV doesn’t necessarily contain 50ml of alcohol in 100ml of the whole drink, but a little bit more. This is because the volume of a mixture changes when we mix two different things. But this difference is not big, no more than 2.5%.

Can Jägermeister catch fire easily?

No. Normally, beverages are only considered flammable if they have 50% ABV or more. If flames reach a glass of Jägermeister, it wouldn’t burn right away.

A beverage like Jägermeister would only catch fire if is tossed into big flames, or if it is heated first. But the liqueur is normally consumed cold, so this hazard gets even lower.

Also, due to its low flashpoint, flammable vapors would arise from a cup of it, and they could catch fire. But only if there’s a naked flame close by. The product can’t self-ignite.

But alcohol can evaporate much easier than water. So if a beverage below 50% ABV is mildly heathen, the alcohol would just start evaporating before burns. This doesn’t mean there’s no hazard.

And as we said before, beware if you drink and smoke at the same time. Being in a room with good ventilation or outside is the best choice. Flammable mists of alcohol can be explosive.

Is Jägermeister expensive?

A 750ml (25,4 fl oz) bottle of Jägermeister liqueur, in July 2022, costed around $19, in USD.

A bigger bottle of 1.75 liters (53.2 fl oz), costs around $37.

These prices were obtained from Walmart. They can vary in a local store and will be much higher in a club. A typical cost of a Jägermeister shot is between $2.50 and $5.50.

Outside the US there can be other importation taxes that makes the price higher. Every drop of Jägermeister comes from a facility headquartered in Wolfenbüttel, Germany.

liquor or liqueur?

Liquor is a kind of distilled beverage, fermented from sources of grains, malts, and other things. The final product depends a lot on the start materials and process.

Liqueurs, although, are not fermented. They look much more like the extraction of flavoring compounds, mixture with water and alcohol separately.

There are many kinds of liqueurs.

  • Coffee liqueur: made of coffee beans soaked in liquor and then combined with syrup and a vanilla extract.
  • Fruit liqueur: is most commonly made using neutral spirits or brandy, adding fruits and sugar to create a slightly sweet beverage. Limoncello (lemon-based) and Grand Marnier (orange-based) are some of the most popular.
  • Crème liqueur: Bailey’s Irish Cream is probably the most common crème liqueur, it’s known worldwide. It’s a milky beverage made using Irish whiskey, cream, and cocoa.
  • Herbal liqueur: this is the type of Jagermeister. It has licorice notes and a present herbal scent. The taste is considerable pungent, a unique mixture of spices and herbs.
  • Nut-flavored liqueur: Hazelnut-flavored Frangelico and almond-based Amaretto are the most common among these liqueurs. They are sweet and slightly spicy, usually made with rum or whiskey and combined with common nuts and seeds like: almonds, hazelnut, and, apricot.

Is liquor a flammable liquid?

Liquors are distilled beverages that originated from the fermentation process of many different kinds of things. The distillation enhances the alcohol quantity, which makes liquor a flammable liquid.

All things we ingest are rather organic (chemically speaking, this includes carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, fibers, etc.) or inorganic (water, minerals, and salts).

A liquor or liquor can have many things in its formula, but when it comes to flammability, only the major constituents matter. Most of liquors and liqueurs are mainly made of water.

But water is a liquid that can’t burn. Because of that, the more water booze has, the less flammable it will be.

What is the most flammable liquor?

The liquor’s flammability is higher when the alcohol content is bigger.

We can say that the most alcoholic liquid in the world would be pure alcohol. Although, there’s no booze that’s so strong. Only reactants used in labs can reach nearly 100% alcohol.

But perhaps the most alcoholic liquor in the world is the Polish Spirytus Stawski, a vodka that reached incredibly 192 proof (96% ABV)!

Conclusion

Jägermeister has 35% alcohol by volume (70 proof), which is not big enough to be considered flammable. However, it can burn if tossed into a fire, and can become explosive if sprayed into flames.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS): Is  jagermeister flammable?

Does Jagermeister taste good?

Jagermeister is made of herbs, blossoms, roots, and fruits. It has a considerable bitter taste, so it depends on everyone’s personal opinion.

The drink is a digestif, originally meant to be ingested in small doses after meals, to enhance digestion. Nowadays, although, it’s a common kind of drink, normally considered booze.

Is Jager stronger than whiskey?

When it comes to alcohol, Jägermeister and whiskey have similar strengths. Whiskey is normally 80 or 70 proof, while Jager is 70. But there are many whiskeys much more alcoholic than that.

Whiskey is aged for years in oak barrels to acquire oaky and char tastes, which brings complexity to the liquor. Jägermeister is a digestif made of more than 60 ingredients.

We can say that a common whiskey has about the same strength as Jägermeister, but there are many types of whiskeys much more alcoholic.

Is Jägermeister vegan?

Yes, it’s vegan. Jägermeister contains no animal-derived ingredients, only herbs, blossoms, roots, fruits, alcohol, and water. It’s also gluten-free.
